When critics and cynics managed to get over the shock of discovering
that Julian Lennon looked like, sounded reminiscent of, and occasionally
thought like his dad, they discovered in Valotte evidence of a real
musical talent. In comparison with the pre-formed, vacuum packed,
over-hyped formulae offerings that were the order of the day, Valotte
was an unashamed display of raw talent. It's not surprising therefore
that some tracks stood out above the rest.
Julian wrote all but two of the tracks. Guitarist Carlton Morales
joined him and his life-long friend Justin Clayton in writing the
title track. Following release as a single in the US, 'Valotte'
was certified gold in January 1985 and by March was platinum. 'Too
Late For Goodbyes' was the second single to reach the top ten, spending
two weeks in the No. 1 slot. Julian was nominated for a Grammy in
the category of Best New Artist.
Julian knew that comparisons with his dad would always be made,
but he also knew that he wanted to make music and in Valotte he
established his credentials as an accomplished musician with an
interesting voice - and something to say.
