Julian sailed on the SS France to New York in July with Elton John and
Tony King to visit his father. John was recording Walls and Bridges.
Elton said of the trip: "Julian was a dream. He waited for us outside
our staterooms and escorted us to the dining room, always made sure we
had good seats at all the events on board."
Julian was recorded playing drums whilst his dad sang Ya-Ya. The album
credits read: 'starring Julian Lennon on drums and dad on piano and vocals'.
When Julian first heard himself on the album he asked his dad: "Why
did you do that? If I'd known it was going on the album I would have played
better."
John's fourth solo album went to number one in the US charts and a single
from the album, Whatever Gets You Thru the Night, became his first
post-Beatles chart-topping single. More than a million copies of Walls
and Bridges were sold within 10 days of it's US release. John said
of the album: "Musically, my mind was just a clutter. It was apparent
on Walls and Bridges, which was the work of a semi-sick craftsman. There
was no inspiration and it gave an aura of misery."
