Relationship: Maternal Grandfather of John Lennon
1874 - 1949

George was born in Liverpool to William Henry Stanley and Eliza Jane Gildea.

George spent many years at sea, working as a sail maker for all sorts of ocean going vessels including the famous tall ships. When he returned home to Liverpool he worked for the London, Liverpool and Glasgow Tug Salvage Company which carried out marine salvage work in the local area. He was involved with one famous submarine rescue. The top secret experimental submarine The Thetis sank on the 1st June 1939 with all hands on board when it was on trials in Liverpool Bay. Because it was a covert operation George's company's involvement was curtailed early on and only the Admiralty salvage experts were allowed near it.

George married Annie Millward. After losing two children before they were three years old, they went onto have five daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Julia, and Harriet who nicknamed their father 'Pop'. Because George was away from home a good deal Annie effectively became the head of the family. After Annie died in 1941 the girls continued to live at home till they married. That is except for Julia who remained at the family home after marrying Alfred Lennon and giving birth to their son, John Lennon.

'Pop' Stanley doted on his grandson John and often took him out for walks.

George died in 1949.
